History Summary - Snowblind edition

Eiri grew up in a loving and stable household with both parents and a younger sister named Moe. And then when he was in middle school, there was a house fire and while everyone else died, he survived. Some time later, he was picked up by a Korean gang and through a series of unfortunate events (probably) he became a sniper, and a damn good one, at that. And yet, during his time in the gang, he was nicknamed Suregi, or Trash. All the same, he stuck around, but then when a gang war broke out and his gang’s leader was killed, Eiri was sent on a revenge mission to take out those who had killed his leader. He successfully did this, but in the process, he was shot five times, fatally, and yet he survived.

Hm.

After this, he was discovered by a man named Ichijima, who was in charge of the spy agency Sakura, in the Church (it’s not actually a Christian organization, so don’t let that confuse you). Ichijima told him that his inability to die could be put to good use as a spy. Really, there wasn’t much of a choice for Eiri, because it was either go back to the streets or do something useful. So he accepted. Once a part of Sakura, he was eventually given a partner, called a Messiah, and this partner was Haku Mitsumi. And things probably would have been fine except for a couple things. First of all, Haku was aloof, a slob, difficult, and all-around annoying. Secondly, he was a jinx. All of his previous Messiah had died because of this jinx and Eiri was bound to be the next one.

What. A. Bummer.

Regardless, the two of them stuck together and ended up working regularly with two other Messiah teams for missions. That is, until one partner from each of those other teams died (one was killed in action, the other became a traitor and was eventually killed anyway) and the surviving partners were paired up as Messiah. They were Shuusuke Shiba and Souma Gojyo. Eiri and Haku became friends with them (despite friendships being banned between people who weren’t Messiah, but Sakura can shove it because if you’re going to stick people together over and over, they’re going to get attached, this is basic human nature) and the four completed multiple missions together.

However, in that time, Haku and Eiri’s relationship was just stable enough, but not the ideal partnership in Sakura. Haku infuriated Eiri practically every day (by setting multiple obnoxious alarms, leaving his candy wrappers and empty juice boxes everywhere, and being embarrassing for no good reason) and Eiri constantly complained about wanting a different Messiah. He didn’t get his wish, much to his eternal consternation. Souma and Shuusuke tried to get them to talk to each other more since they had learned that communication is key in a partnership, but things didn’t really start to change for Eiri and Haku until a mission brought the four of them face-to-face with a terrorist named Higayama, who was actually working for the Northern Union, Sakura’s biggest enemy. Higayama had been a thorn in their side before, but this time, he informed Haku that he knew where his brother was. Haku hadn’t seen his brother since he was young and so this information was incredibly important, but it also made him shut down because his brother was out there and alive somewhere.

But Eiri, despite all his bitching and moaning about Haku, couldn’t stand to see Haku in such a shape and so he tried over and over to reach out to him (which was a little difficult with fights breaking out between the Sakura side and Higayama and his other terrorist allies). But when Eiri was finally able to reach Haku, Higayama ended up shooting him four times (three of these was when Eiri threw himself in front of Haku to protect him). This snapped Haku out of his stupor and he stood his ground until Higayama ran off (to Mexico or wherever, who knows, he just disappeared), but then immediately ran to Eiri’s side and they had a heart-to-heart and accepted each other as their Messiah while Eiri bled all over the place, how gross.

Of course, Eiri survived that incident.

Time moved on and Eiri and Haku’s relationship stayed about the same, with Eiri throwing tantrums whenever Haku did something embarrassing (even if Eiri was the embarrassing one at times, like when he cried to Souma and Shuusuke about how he had a dream about Haku taking a chocolate bath, like, you’re doing this to yourself, you nerd), but regardless he still stuck around with Haku. The four friends also became senpai to some of the newer recruits and Eiri was always excited for hand-to-hand training because he could show off, how exciting. Soon enough, though, Souma and Shuusuke were given their graduation mission and Eiri and Haku helped them complete it. The reign of the Fantastic Four was over.

Eiri and Haku’s experience as senpai would come in handy soon. Sakura recruited four new cadets, Kaito Yuuri, Mamoru Shirasaki, Ryo Ariga, and Seiren Mamiya, and Eiri and Haku were in charge of overseeing their training. Basically they became Team Senpai and also Team Parents with Eiri as the mom and when their little teamsters didn’t always get along, Eiri was visibly worried. Because he had seen the same happen between Souma and Shuusuke before, but there wasn’t much he could do about it because he tended to stand back and watch from a distance as everyone started to work things out for themselves. Then news came out of a flu-like outbreak in Japan and while Eiri was watching about it on his phone, some guy with a hobo jacket sat down right next to him out of nowhere and started chatting about it.

He also gave Eiri a bag of juice boxes and asked that Eiri give them to a “friend.” Except when Eiri noticed the brand of the juice boxes (Nanny, the kind that Haku drinks), he got suspicious because who else drank Nanny? But when he looked back up to ask the man about it, he was already gone. Needless to say, the encounter put Eiri on edge and as he dwelt upon it more, his suspicions grew. He even asked Haku why he drank that brand (to which Haku answered unhelpfully that he had been drinking it since in his mother’s womb).

But this virus was still serious stuff, so Eiri was sent undercover with Shirasaki, Ariga, and Mamiya to meet the scientist who was in charge of making it so they could try and glean any information about it and eventually things got so bad that they had to break their cover and stop the people who were actually utilizing the virus in order to make a new and better Japan or some such nonsense.

And who was in charge of this group of bad guys (they’re Russian, of course, they’re always Russian)? The creeper in the hobo coat.

There was a shootout, the head scientist they were investigating was killed, and Creeper in the Hobo Coat got away. But at least Yuuri was able to get the virus instead of Creeper, so at least it was in the hands of the less questionable organization here. After that mission, Eiri was still suspicious and very concerned, so he asked Haku about the last time he had seen his big brother (remember how Higayama had said he knew of his whereabouts?) and Haku said it was when he was a kid.

At some undisclosed point in time afterward, Eiri did his research and eventually found out what he had suspected. That Creeper in the Hobo Coat was a man named Serizawa who was possibly in charge of the Northern Union. And that Serizawa’s real name was Sou Mitsumi. AKA Haku’s older brother who had been missing all those years.

And then Eiri and Haku were told that they would be carrying out their final mission in order to graduate from Sakura, and this mission involved the virus and Serizawa.

Eiri wasn’t sure if he should tell Haku the truth about Serizawa, though, because he knew it would hurt him, so he asked Yuuri for some advice (”So I’ve got a friend, you see…”) and Yuuri told Eiri that if he were to hide something from Shirasaki, his Messiah, then he would know he was hiding something and it would just be painful for everyone, so he’d end up being honest. Eiri considered this and decided to follow Yuuri’s advice, even though it was hard to break Haku’s heart, but it would have been even worse to keep secrets.

Except he had already done so up until that point and it was clear that Haku realized it as well. What had happened to the two of them being completely open with each other? Their relationship was getting pretty tense at that point.

Then it was time for their mission and the four trainees accompanied them. But in the middle of the mission, when Eiri was alone, Haku lost contact with him (right before Serizawa showed up to say hello to his little brother) and when the cadets caught up with Haku, Mamiya informed them that Eiri had died. Sakura ruled his death as a suicide, but wanted Haku to complete the mission with a new partner regardless of the fact that he and Eiri were so close. Obviously, this was a tough time for Haku.

Then as he was cooperating with Kimitoshi Misu, who worked with the police force connected to Sakura, Misu betrayed him and tried to take the virus so he could take it to Serizawa, but who arrived just in time to stop things? Eiri, of course, who had faked his death, and Mamiya, who had been in on it. It turned out that Misu also had carried out a fake betrayal. All of this was done so they could lure out Serizawa, but even though everyone was alive and all of this was done for the good of the mission, Eiri and Haku’s relationship was on the rocks because of this lack of communication.

Eventually they run into Serizawa again and this time Eiri learns that Serizawa had been behind the house fire that killed his entire family because his own father had somehow been involved with the Northern Union, as well. He also revealed he had been behind the deaths of Haku’s former Messiahs. Eiri tried to kill Serizawa, which would have solved a lot of problems, but Haku still viewed him as his big brother, so he stopped Eiri twice and let Serizawa get away. This only added dissonance between them. Finally, however, Serizawa was captured and Eiri could tell that Haku was not in a good place. He talked to people about Haku’s jinx, how his Messiah will always die, and eventually confronted Haku out of concern for his own well-being.

They drew guns on each other, and it seemed like Haku would shoot Eiri just to fulfill his jinx, but instead he turned the gun on himself. He explained that he couldn’t bear to see Eiri die because of him and how he hadn’t even found a reason for living, anyway. Eiri tried desperately to stop him, telling him to stop and wait over and over and that if Haku were to die, then what was Eiri going to live for now?

And just as Haku is about to pull the trigger on himself, Eiri finds himself in Norfinbury.
